Re-engaging Scripture After Spiritual Abuse
with Pete Enns, Ph.D.
Biblical scholar Pete Enns explores curiosity over certainty in faith, tracing Pete’s journey into biblical studies and his core framework engaging scripture—the Bible is ancient, ambiguous, and diverse, and functions as wisdom literature inviting discernment in real situations rather than a rule book.
They discuss how embracing mystery can be comforting, the pitfalls of “the Bible clearly says,” and why context matters more than isolated verses. Pete urges reading the situation as well as the text and seeing multiple biblical voices as a feature, not a flaw.
Listeners will learn practical ways to navigate deconstruction, fear, and theological tension; how to re-engage Scripture without shame; and why community and curiosity matter. Pete offers pastoral guidance on questions like resurrection and suffering, plus helpful resources.

Peter Enns (Ph.D Harvard University) is Abram S. Clemens professor of Biblical Studies at Eastern University in St. Davids, PA. He has written several books and is the cohost of the popular podcast The Bible for Normal People.

Beyond Belief: Breaking Free from Fundamentalist Mindsets, Not Just Doctrines
with Kate Boyd
In this conversation, Kate explores how leaving fundamentalist Christianity isn’t just about changing doctrines but transforming the underlying mindsets that shape how we believe. Kate distinguishes beliefs (the content) from mindsets (the operating system) and names common fundamentalist patterns that can persist even after deconstruction.
Learn practical ways to shift your operating system: naming the pattern, practicing both/and thinking, making peace with “I don’t know,” creating space for differences, auditing where and how they belong, releasing the need to defend, and moving from consumption to connection. Learn how to spot and unwind old operating systems that persist after belief changes, and discover practical resources for practicing a more spacious, resilient faith.
Bio
Kate Boyd is the author of An Untidy Faith (Herald Press) and founder The Remembered Table. She guides those leaving toxic church environments to reconstruct faith toward wholeness by equipping people to break free from fundamentalist mindsets, reconstruct faith with nuance and integrity, and trust their own spiritual discernment. Kate holds a master's in theological studies from Perkins School of Theology.

Who Will Help When Community is Lost?
with Dr. Janyne McConnaughey
In this conversation, author and educator Janyne shares how beginning trauma therapy at 61 reshaped her life, writing, and faith. She recounts uncovering childhood abuse, publishing her books, and stepping into work with the Attachment & Trauma Network and the Religious Trauma Network.
Janyne explains why attachment is foundational to self-regulation (not control), how ministry practices can retraumatize, and why “deconstruction” often looks like reframing harmful beliefs. She also describes losing her church community, caring for her husband through a liver transplant, and discovering genuine support outside religious spaces.
Learn the neurobiology of belonging, the difference between loneliness and aloneness, and practical ways to prepare for crisis by healing—through therapy, psychoeducation, attuned communities, and small “glimmers” of hope. Expect insights on worthiness, trusting help, and finding spiritual connection beyond tradition, plus helpful resources.

Life After Faith Crisis
with Catherine McNiel
Author Catherine McNeil discusses her book Mid-Faith Crisis, using the “how it started/how it’s going” meme to frame the journey from early certainty to seasons of doubt and disillusionment. She and coauthor Jason outline four stages of faith—inherited, confident, mid, and conscious—normalizing the “wall” many hit and reframing doubt as part of growth, not failure. They contrast brittle certainty with relational faith, emphasize agency over prescription, and warn against swapping one tribe’s ultimatums for another’s.
Learn how to care for your nervous system amid spiritual upheaval, find safe community, and cultivate wisdom, humility, and comfort with mystery. Rich metaphors—compost, seasons, rip currents—offer hope that endings can become soil for new life, and that surrender can be an agency-rich resilience.
